Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds: What's the Difference?

Lab-grown and mined diamonds share the same chemical makeup, the same hardness, and the same sparkle. Where they differ is origin, cost, and how easily you can trace where they came from.

Origin

Mined diamonds are extracted from the earth through large-scale mining operations. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments using one of two established methods, then cut and polished exactly like their mined counterparts.

Quality and Grading

Both are graded on the same 4Cs — cut, colour, clarity and carat — by the same gemological institutes. Origin doesn't change how a diamond is assessed for quality.

Cost

Lab-grown diamonds are typically significantly less expensive per carat than mined diamonds of comparable quality — a gap that's made larger, better pieces more accessible for everyday wear rather than once-a-decade purchases.

Sourcing and Traceability

A lab-grown diamond's origin is straightforward to verify — it was grown, not extracted, and its full journey can be certified end to end. This is a large part of why Verasah works exclusively with lab-grown, IGI-certified stones.

Which Should You Choose?

There's no wrong answer — both are genuine diamonds. The decision usually comes down to what matters more to you: tradition and origin story, or transparency and value per carat.
